Spirit of Martial Arts?
by Cheryl Matrasko
Last month, I received an
e-mail from a reader that read my article on
Self-Training in Aikido. He
explained the he was not in active practice for health reasons and was
wondering:
" . . . how to "keep in
touch" with the spirit of the martial art... given that it's a martial
art dedicated to the improvement of humanity in general . . ."

Self Training in Aikido?
by Cheryl Matrasko
Just about every three days, I
receive e-mail requesting that I send a book or video to someone so that
they can learn Aikido by themselves. Sometimes the reasons vary:
there are no dojos close by, lack of good instructors, etc.
I received an e-mail a couple of minutes
ago with the following request . . .

THE BASICS OF
ABSORPTION AND METABOLISM OF A MEAL
by James Loeser
Americans typically eat 2-3 meals per day. The food we take
in during each meal is digested by the body, by a process called metabolism, a term
most people are familiar with; it can refer the to overall functioning of the body or it
can refer to specific bodily function, such as food metabolism.

Defense Problems with
Small Limbs
From an anonymous female reader:
I'm practicing Zenshin Karate and
absolutely hate sparring sessions as I always get hit. My blocks
aren't good and my punches never quite make it to the practicing
opponent. I'm of small build and believe my problems are because my
limbs are too short. Any tips on how I can improve??

Discipline

Martial Arts or Formal Education?
Some time ago, someone sent me what appeared to
be a desperate letter questioning the legitimacy of some instructor that apparently opened
his doors and claimed to be fluent in many martial arts.

| Bushido,
Warrior Code of Conduct We
can hardly begin a discussion on Bushido without introducing the Samurai warrior. After
all, it is the Samurai that developed, chose, and dedicated their entire lives to the
unwritten code of conduct, known as Bushido. To do less, would be a dishonor to their
memory and the legacy of martial ways, which prevent us from being barbarous
savages.

| Entering: Irimi and Tenkan Irimi is a method of entering an attack, as is tenkan.
The best way to understand irimi and tenkan is to know that they are both methods of
entering an attack for the best advantage. These two differ in the ways they undertake
this.
